rtwood Design designed and crafted much of the interior millwork throughout the Post Hotel as part of the 1987 renovations and additions, including design and production of the main lobby decorative woodwork, the lobby bar and wine library feature, the front desk and related components, the main dining room service bar, and the public area furniture. The large photo on the left shows the library millwork designed and crafted by Artwood Design. The smaller photo shows some of the hand-carved detail crafted by Artwood Design. Thousands of people have stood at the landing beside the signature owl for a photo. Artwood's design and millwork were both favourably reviewed in the Los Angeles Times.
As well as becoming a signature piece for the hotel, the owl has become an Artwood Design signature. A similar owl was incorporated into the staircase design for the Kanaya Hotel in Nikko, Japan, where Artwood Design crafted a three storey feature staircase for the hotel. Artwood's signature Canadian owl stands guard from the top floor landing of the Japanese hotel.
Located close to Canada's Lake Louise National Park, the Post Hotel was built in the 1920's as part of the Canadian National Parks network. The hotel was renovated and additions made in 1987, when Jeremy Sturgess of Andrishak and Sturgess, Architects were contracted to upgrade the existing building.
The hotel has a thoroughly Canadian look to it and incorporates many Arts and Crafts design features and details prevalent when the original hotel was first built. True to the Arts and Crafts philosophy, the hotel uses materials from the area, as evidenced by the natural pine exterior and natural pine interior woodwork. It was the Canadian look that lead Jeremy Sturgess and Artwood Design to work on the Kanaya Hotel in Nikko, Japan.
Artwood Design was contracted to complete much of the interior woodwork, including design and production of the main lobby decorative woodwork, the lobby bar and wine library feature, the front desk and related components, the main dining room service bar, and the public area furniture.
