rtwood
Design has designed and built extensively for private residences. Artwood is
currently working on the design and production of millwork for a local home.
The renovation involves a complete redesign of the 1960's ranch-style home,
incorporating Western Yellow Cedar, Fir, Oak, extensive sculptured, cut, and
sandblasted glass, stone, and an indoor waterfall. The design and all the materials
have been used in the process of "blurring the division between indoor
and outdoor. Large windows allow the residents to look out from the extensive
interior woodwork onto Yellow Cedar decking and furniture, an outdoor waterfall
(to mirror the interior waterfall), the giant Firs on the property, and the
ocean water lapping up to the property.
We will have photographs of the current renovation project in the near future. Please check back soon.
Other
work has included less extensive renovation work, including work on "Inglenook
House," a 1911 Victoria, BC home. The owners had already extensively renovated
their home, completely replacing plumbing, electrical, foundations, roof surfaces,
and structurally upgrading the home. However, when it came to the interior,
the owners were at a loss. Artwood Design designed and built only a small portion
of the interior (a small library) but the result was exactly what the owners
were looking for. Artwood used original materials salvaged from the home and
integrated them into the new library shelves and milwork. The new work produced
by Artwood Design fits perfectly with the medieval-style arts and crafts flavour
of the interior. In fact, people who have seen our work in Inglenook House could
not tell new work from the original.
The owners of Inglenook House were so pleased with the result that one of them wrote an article for Style 1900 Magazine, which specializes in Arts and Crafts design, homes, furniture, and collectibles. You can read the article here. You can find a link to Style 1900 Magazine in the links section of this site.
Artwood
is not confined to renovation design. Artwood also designs and builds custom
furniture and even custom homes. While Artwood Design often designs and crafts
custom furniture to go with a renovation or construction project it's carrying
out, many customers have benefited from Artwood furniture. As with all its work,
Artwood strives to ensure any new furniture fits in with its environment, whether
the environment is outdoors, interior, contemporary, Victorian, or Arts
and Crafts.
We are comfortable designing wood furniture in practically any style and can accomplish practically any design goal you may have. The Morris chair pictured here was custom designed and built to a customers specifications. It features white oak construction, mortise and tenon joints, and unique curved arms (curving down toward the back of the chair and then curving back up). Probably the most unique feature of this chair is the fact that there is not a single 90 degree angle in it, except for the front and back. Not only does the seat of the chair angle back toward the back, the sides also taper wide to narrow from front to back.
